A Magical Night at Musical Tribute to John Denver
The 11th Annual Musical Tribute to John Denver, held October 10 and 11 at the historic Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, Colorado, to benefit Challenge Aspen, was a magical evening full of music, fun and special memories of John. The event, produced by Karmen Dopslaff and Expect A Miracle…Now, Foundation, featured music performed by a host of John Denver's talented former band members, songwriters and friends. Chris Nole, who recorded with John from 1994 until his tragic death in 1997, served as the Music Director for this year's tribute.
Many of the gifted writers whose songs helped catapult John Denver into chart-topping success were among this years' performers, including John Sommers, writer of "Thank God I'm A Country Boy," Bill Danoff, writer of "Take Me Home Country Roads," and fan favorite Mollie Weaver. Also joining the stage again this year were Denver's former guitar player, Pete Huttlinger; Colorado's troubador, Jim Salestrom; Mack Bailey, the celebrated tenor; Denny Brooks; Alan Deremo; Richie Garcia; Kenn Roberts, and crowd favorite Gary Mule Deer. Special guest Steve Gillette sang his chart-topping song, "Darcy Farrow," recorded by John Denver, and Ellen Stapenhorst added her rich voice and insightful songs to the evening.
Each magical evening was capped with a post-show VIP reception at Crystal Palace Grille where Vince Lahey and his crew provided hearty and tasty hors d'oeuvres and a lively setting for the concert-goers and musicians.
Challenge Aspen extends a special "thank you" to producer Karmen Dopslaff, publicist Erin Morris, and long-time sponsor R.H. Crossland Foundation.
